Design Visual & Media Arts

The Design, Visual, and Media Arts pathway includes those occupations that use visual art, digital media, and Web-based tools and materials as the primary means of communication and expression. In addition to an understanding of current workplace practice, this career pathway requires the development of knowledge and skills in both visual art concepts as well as new and emerging digital processes by which individuals are able to create and communicate complex concepts in a broad range of occupations and professions.

Course Sequence

Yearbook Design is a year-long course designed to have students understand the role of visual art and design, and its impact on society and culture, particularly in publication mediums. The course will focus on a student’s understanding of a designer’s target audience and stimulating creativity through a variety of two-dimensional media. Then, students will apply this artistic process to create designs for the yearbook publication. Finally, they will maintain the integrity of design through the editing process, wile collaborating and communicating with their colleagues on the yearbook staff. Assignments will have students process, respond to, and judge design works using their knowledge of the elements of art and principles of design.

Advanced Yearbook Design is a year-long course designed to have students continue on their development of publication skills while developing leadership ability. The course will focus on strengthening the students’ understanding of a designer’s target audience and stimulating creativity through a variety of two-dimensional media. Then students will apply this artistic process to create designs for the yearbook publication. Finally, they will maintain the integrity of design through the editing process, while collaborating and communicating with their colleagues on the yearbook staff. Assignments will have students process, respond to, and judge design works using their knowledge of the elements of art and the principles of design.

Production & Managerial Arts

Whatever the form or medium of creative expression, all careers in the Arts, Media, and Entertainment sector require “publication” or a public presentation in one way or another. Consequently, the Production and Managerial Arts pathway focuses on both the technical skills and the organizational and managerial knowledge necessary to bring arts, media, and entertainment to the public.

Course Sequence

Students will be introduced to the skills for producing media, such as posters, videos and web content.  While learning these skills, students will be involved in the DNHS Media Network learning journalistic skills of news gathering, writing stories and editing video for a weekly news show and updating the school website.  Media arts works closely with Leadership and the school administration to help promote school-wide activities through multimedia.  Intro to Media Arts 1 is a prerequisite for Intermediate Media Arts II

Students will improve on their skills of producing media, such as posters, videos and web content. While using these skills, students will be involved in

the DNHS Media Network honing their journalistic skills of news gathering, writing stories and editing video for a weekly news show and updating the school website. Media Arts II students will be introduced to television studio production techniques and live event broadcasting. Students will have more responsibility working independently and mentoring new students to the class while working closely with Leadership and the school administration to help promote school-wide activities through multimedia. Intermediate Media Arts II is a prerequisite for Advanced Media Arts III.

Students will be more involved in the management of the DNHS Media Network, directing news gathering, story writing assignments and producing video for a weekly new show.  Media Arts III students will be introduced to network management techniques and directing news and live event broadcasts.  Students will have more responsibility working as a management team while mentoring new students to the class.  Media Arts III students will create media arts products that demonstrate entry level workforce skills and comprehensive knowledge of industry practices, including management to receive certificates.  This is a capstone course.
